The Norman Church

N - St Edward.jpg

St. Edward the Martyr – was a good Christian and succeeded his father to the throne in 975AD, yet there was much opposition coming from his stepmother who wanted her son to rule instead. She, Queen Elfrida sort to dismantle St. Edwards claim to the throne by organizing attacks on monasteries and other places in order to secure the throne for her 10 year old son Ethelred. Here is where the Church in the person of St. Dunstan as the Archbishop of Canterbury (909-988AD) defends St. Edward as rightful king. St. Edward was a generous soul especially through the famine years where he brought the community together and in many ways fostered a sense of social security. Yet in 978AD St. Edward visits his step brother and it is here that the Queen orchestrates his murder via dagger.
