THE MYSTERY OF HOLY UNCTION
WHAT IS HOLY UNCTION?
The Mystery of Holy Unction is in a way similar to that of Holy Chrismation where one is anointed but seven times with blessed oil Not Chrism; for their spiritual wellbeing and healing in times of illness- and strength when one is approaching physical death. The Ministry of Healing is an everyday affair where those who are sick recourse to the spiritual hospital the Church for treatment from the Divine Physician the Comforter who fills all with His mercy and love.
WHY SHOULD ONE RECIEVE UNCTION?
We live in a world and definitely in a post Christian society that suggests that if there is a divine being-this is not really interested in mortals and can’t change negative situations; prayer is a waste of time and incoherent at that! Thus, the Faith of our Fathers which has been proved like gold in a furnace: (Wis 3: 6-8), and stood firm resounding throughout the ages; encourages us to walk by faith and not by sight rejoicing in the promises of Jesus our Lord and God. Furthermore, James brother of the Lord and 1st Bishop of Jerusalem exhorts the sick to summon the presbyters to anoint them with oil and the prayer of faith will save the sick. (Jm 5: 13-16)
HOW IS ONE ANNOINTED?
The Rite of Anointing differs depending on which Orthodox Jurisdiction one belongs to. For those of the Slavonic Tradition, the custom is to be anointed seven times during the Unction Service. Thus, the faithful are anointed on the senses as takes place in Holy Chrismation; but each time after the readings, prayers, and Gospels have been proclaimed - in a seven part procedure. In the Greek Tradition, anointing takes place once only during the service.
WHO MAY BE ANNOINTED?
People may be aware that anointing’s are common in Orthodox Worship especially during the All Night Vigil served on Saturday and Feast day Evenings. These anointing’s are not of a direct sacramental nature and anyone may benefit from these. As for The Mystery of Holy Unction; all who truly believe and those that are in full Communion with the Orthodox Church may approach the Mystery.
WHERE IS ONE ANNOINTED?
The anointing takes place in the middle of the temple where people file in line to receive the anointing. This Mystery may be served in houses, hospitals and so forth. Thus, depending on the pastoral need, the procedure may vary according to the norms of circumstance and the presbyters’ discretion.
WHEN IS ONE ANNOINTED?
Holy Unction is traditionally served on the Wednesday Evening during Holy Week. The Sacrament need not be served on this night alone, but whenever the need arises. The Mystery is also served by the presbyter for the healing process of those who have lapsed away from the faith and those who have been disturbed by spiritual warfare. (Mtt 10: 7-8)
